Opinion & editorial

Alongside our reporting we publish opinion: analysis from our own desk, and contributed commentary from people working in regulation, manufacturing, pharmacy, research and public health across the continent.

How opinion is separated from news

Opinion carries a visible label at the top of the page and in every listing where it appears. It is written by named authors, and it is never presented as a news report. Our news reporting does not take positions; our opinion pages do, and the distinction is made explicit rather than left to the reader to infer.

What we publish

• Analysis — our own interpretation of a regulatory development and what follows from it.
• Contributed commentary — argument from practitioners with direct standing in the subject.
• Response pieces — replies from organisations or individuals who have been the subject of our coverage.

Submitting a contribution

We welcome contributions from people with direct professional experience of the subject they are writing about. Before submitting, note the following.

• Pieces run to roughly 700–1,200 words and make a single clear argument.
• Claims of fact must be supported and sourced; we check them as we would our own reporting.
• Authors disclose all relevant affiliations and funding, and these are published with the piece.
• We do not publish marketing copy, product promotion, or pieces ghostwritten by a commercial party.
• We edit for clarity, length and accuracy, and we share material changes with the author before publication.

Right of reply

An organisation or individual criticised in an opinion piece may request a right of reply. We consider such requests seriously and publish replies where the criticism was specific and substantial.
