The Autoridade Nacional Reguladora de Medicamentos (ANARME) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) have convened in Maputo to evaluate progress on the continental-funded Medicines and Vaccines Safety Project.
The three-day assessment, which began on 16 September 2026, reviews activities implemented under AUDA-NEPAD’s Programme for Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems (AU-3S). ANARME’s Chair of the Board, Tânia Sitoie, said the project had delivered notable achievements in electronic adverse reaction reporting, safety data management, signal detection, risk management, training, stakeholder engagement and pharmacovigilance communication.
Sitoie acknowledged delays in procurement and contracting processes had affected timely execution of some activities. She highlighted the creation of a Medicines Information Centre (Centro de Informação de Medicamentos, CIM) as a milestone that would improve access to reliable medicines information and support evidence-based decision-making.
Participants will identify remaining challenges and define next steps for institutional sustainability. Sitoie said ANARME remained committed to completing all planned activities under the joint medicines and vaccines safety programme, describing pharmacovigilance as central to patient safety and public health protection.
Kenneth Onu, Principal Programme Officer for Human Capital and Institutional Development at AUDA-NEPAD, congratulated ANARME on achieving WHO Maturity Level 3 for its medicines and vaccines regulatory system and on Sitoie’s reappointment as board chair. He said the agency was open to supporting full implementation of the AU-3S initiative.
