Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed nearly 330 tonnes of seized narcotics valued at 301.1 billion naira (about 223 million US dollars) in the Ojo area of Lagos, following an order of the Federal High Court.
Opioids are listed among the destroyed substances alongside cocaine and heroin, which puts part of the consignment in the same category as medicines diverted from legitimate supply. Importers, distributors and pharmacy wholesalers handling controlled analgesics in Nigeria should expect continued scrutiny of licensing and record-keeping, and any pharmaceutical opioids in a haul of this size point to leakage from the regulated chain rather than clandestine synthesis alone. The agency did not break down how much of the total was pharmaceutical opioid product or identify any source manufacturer or importer.
The destruction took place on 17 August. Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, who heads the NDLEA, said the operation demonstrated Nigeria’s determination to combat trafficking and deprive criminal groups of their resources, and linked the illicit trade to the financing of organised crime, terrorism and violent extremism.
Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the volume as a measure of the problem. “The scale of what has been destroyed today, about 300 tons of narcotics and psychotropic substances, is a huge and sobering reminder of the enormity of the threat that illicit drugs pose to our communities, our young people, and our collective future,” he said.
The agency did not publish a breakdown by substance, the period over which the consignment was seized, the number of cases involved, or the basis on which it arrived at the naira valuation. Street-value estimates published by enforcement agencies are not market prices and are not comparable to trade or procurement figures.
