Kenya's PPB secures two seats on African Medicines Agency technical committees

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has secured two appointments to the African Medicines Agency (AMA) Technical Committees, announced during the Agency’s inaugural week in Kigali, Rwanda.

Dr Ali Abdulahi Arale, Acting Director of Medical Products and Health Technologies, joins the Technical Committee on Evaluation of Medicines, Vaccines and Biologicals. Dr Edward Abwao joins the Technical Committee on Clinical Trials Oversight and Good Clinical Practice and was elected Chairperson of that committee.

Dr Arale brings over 25 years of professional experience, including 15 years in medicines regulation. Dr Abwao has more than 22 years of experience in medicines regulation and contributed to developing Kenya’s clinical trials regulatory framework.

The Technical Committees operate under the AMA Treaty to provide independent scientific advice on evaluation of medical products and clinical trials oversight. They support evidence-based regulatory decisions, harmonised standards and stronger regulatory systems across African countries.

Both appointments carry initial two-year terms. The PPB stated that their participation will strengthen continental regulatory cooperation, promote scientific excellence and contribute to improved access to quality-assured, safe and efficacious medical products across Africa.

The AMA Week ran from 25 to 30 October 2026 under the theme “Building Africa’s Regulatory Future Together: From National Strength to Continental Impact.”
