The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) has issued a public alert after identifying a falsified veterinary vaccine bearing the name Temevac NDV Strain 1-2.
Wholesalers, retailers and veterinary clinic owners must immediately inspect their stock for the falsified product and cease use if found. TMDA, working with the Tanzania Veterinary Laboratory Agency (TVLA), established that the falsified vaccine was not manufactured by TVLA and is being distributed by unscrupulous traders using forged labels. The authority did not state how the falsified product entered the market or the quantities involved.
The falsified product can be distinguished from the genuine Temevac NDV Strain I-2 vaccine by three label characteristics. The falsified vaccine carries a chicken image where the genuine product displays a microscope; lacks the aluminium foil found on the left side of the genuine label; and omits the batch number while the genuine label includes manufacturing date, expiry date and batch number. The falsified label is printed in English, while the genuine label is in Swahili. The falsified product name ends “1-2” with a numeral, whereas the genuine product ends “I-2” with a capital letter I.
TMDA urged the public to continue reporting individuals or companies involved in distributing falsified, substandard, unregistered or expired medical products.
