Faso FDA and the Agence burkinabè de normalisation, de la métrologie et de la qualité (ABNORM) have agreed to formalise coordination between pharmaceutical regulation and national standard-setting.
The agreement was reached on 19 October 2026 when a Faso FDA delegation led by Director-General Dr Arsène OUÉDRAOGO met ABNORM Director Abraham SOMDA at the standards agency’s headquarters. The two institutions share responsibilities for food, medicines, health products and cosmetics, particularly at borders and in domestic manufacturing facilities.
Two concrete commitments emerged from the meeting. A joint technical team will define each agency’s role across three areas: standards and regulation; laboratories and metrology; and import controls. A formal protocol of agreement will be signed to institutionalise the partnership and intensify joint public health missions.
The initiative follows the creation of Faso FDA in October 2026 through the merger of the former Agence nationale de régulation pharmaceutique (ANRP) and the Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire des aliments et des eaux de consommation (ANSSEAT). The new authority aims to accelerate dossier processing and strengthen field presence.
